Why Are Vegetarians Becoming Fat And Overweight Instead of Healthier When They Stop Eating Meat?

People have their reasons on why they want to become a vegetarian, vegan, etc. Majority of them do it to become healthier and lose weight. Unfortunately, a lot of the vegetarians have been gaining weight and they don't know why. Below are five reasons why vegetarians gain weight and how to avoid it.

1. Veggie burgers and other store bought veggies products - When someone becomes a vegetarian, they think that the veggie burgers and other veggie products are healthier because it does not contain meat and fat from animals. Vegan products are made out of soy, tofu, or vegetables seasoned to taste like meat, contains a lot of butter, sodium, or fat for flavor. The weight gain come from the amount of butter, sodium, and fat consumed per serving. If you want to eat veggie burgers or veggie supplements, eat them once or twice a month to avoid weight gain.

2. Doubling side items - Vegetarians generally would go to restaurant and order two or more sides as a replacement for meat. What they don't know is ordering multiple side items will consume more fat than ordering the original meal. If you order two sides of French fries, the amount of fat and starch in that meal will be more than hamburger and French fries. When it comes to ordering sides, just order one, this will reduce the chance of gaining weight.

3. Starchy Food - When people begin their journey as a vegetarian or vegan, they tend to eat food such as pasta, potatoes, and other food that contain starch . Starchy foods may fill you up but it also can cause weight gain. Starchy foods are quicker to prepare than cutting up and seasoning vegetables. There are a variety of starch foods at restaurants to choose from to substitute for meat. A way to avoid weight gain is to consume minimal starch foods as possible. Eating fruits and vegetables will keep you full and healthy, plus they are great substitute for starchy foods.

4. Salads are not as healthy as you think - Vegetarians and Vegans eat salad to maintain a healthy life. Most salads that are sold in stores have high calories and fat due to the seasonings, preservatives, avocado, and salad dressing. Some salad dressing have so much calories that it defeats that point of eating a salad as a diet. Check the calories on the salad before purchasing.

5. Not Exercising - Many vegetarians believe a way to healthier body is accomplished by just eating certain food. Eating certain food can help get your body healthy but exercising while eating healthy guarantees a healthy body. Working out a few times a week, will burn off unnecessary calories, fat, and tone you body.

Maintaining a healthy life style is something many people should consider doing. Eating healthy and exercising can lead to a longer life. Vegetarians should follow the five guidelines to avoid unnecessary weight gain and live healthier life.
